Telemar and Marlink have teamed up to support Gaetano Mura during his “Solo Round The Globe Record”, a 25,000 nautical miles long, single-handed round-the-world voyage.
At the end of October, the Italian solo sailor left the Spanish coast on board his Class40 Italia sailing boat for his adventure. His Solo Round the Globe Record project will take him around the globe solo-handed while promoting the colours of his native country. Gaetano has been training for over one and a half years for this challenge: to sail more than 25,000 nautical miles and beat China's Guo Chuan record of sailing around the world in 137 days.
Prior to that, his record attempt had been ratified and confirmed by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) who worked on site with the skipper to check that the installed instruments will gather and store all the data on the course. As always during those adventurous races, Satcom plays a vital role – not only to transfer the related data to the WSSRC but also to create a vital, reliable link during the challenging course.
A large part of the navigation will be in very harsh and unwelcoming environments, with extreme weather conditions, very close to polar ices. In a joint approach, Telemar and Marlink will make sure that Gaetano’s voyage is an adventure, but not for his communications: Providing an Iridium Pilot / OpenPort on board, the skipper will stay fully connected via the global reliable voice and data service, incl. also email, internet and other applications to check real-time weather reports or order provisions.
Together, Telemar and Marlink have created a special bundle, providing 6 months of free airtime to the skipper. Iridium will also support the airtime budget as the hardware / terminal was already installed. Telemar and Marlink teams will also provide first-rate technical and operational services to the skipper to support him quickly, efficiently, and with the minimum amount of effort on his part. Whatever the weather during his voyage, the skipper will be kept connected, informed and safe during his race.
"The Solo Round the Globe Record it’s not not the first project we follow together Marlink and Telemar as a new team,” says Marco Imperatori, Land Mobile Applications Manager of Compagnia Generale Telemar. “But it’s a new exciting adventure in our sponsorship story. In 2017, Telemar will celebrate its 70th anniversary celebration, opening a new important chapter for our company. This race arrived just in time to symbolize the strength of this new partnership. Together Telemar & Marlink embarked on board of Italia – Gaetano Mura’s boat – providing airtime package as well as press release, social network advertising, logo provisioning, technical support, etc. Now it is time to follow Gaetano and wish him Good Luck! “
“Jointly with Telemar we already started to prepare for the support of the race back in April," says Catherine Fernandez, Key Account Manager, KSP for Telemar. “We have worked on preliminary activities with Gaetano's team to understand his communication needs and define the corresponding satcom package and support. A few months after we started the project, Gaetano left Gibraltar fully equipped - a good example of successful and effective teamwork! Ciao Gaetano e buona fortuna!”
